SO WHAT IS RN VERSUS DREAMLAND, AND THE WORLD'S CENTRAL MARKET?

Now that you have arrived in USA, the battle starts; RN versus dreamland. The question is why did you relocate to the dreamland?

Is it for sheer travel experience? Just to come and know Hollywood, Silicon Valley or New York? Have you heard about the American dream?

How different your educational system is from that of US or the fact that English language is not your first language is no problem.

All that is important is you perceiving USA as the world’s central market where everything sells. Other tools that you will need are dreaming big, self discipline and being smart to tap into the numerous opportunities.

An RN’s pastime can still be a champion in the RN versus dreamland battle. Everything from talents, skills, professionalism etc sells and buys in the dreamland. Just package whatever you have well and it will sell.

Occasionally, an RN’s spouse or family may not find a job to match his/her exact profession. Many who were CEO and directors may not be able to earn an exact position here.

What is most important is to be able to understand and re-adjust to the American system. And if your family has special skills like painting, writing etc, USA is your land. Just start something from that corner of your apartment and you will be running a whole business in less than a year.

You can even share experiences and professional knowledge with the rest of the world through the internet. Something like what I’m doing now. And you will be rewarded big time! Just make it original and unique!

The beginning of RN versus dreamland can sometimes be difficult. That is the time you compare cost for same products with the prices in your country. And that is when the habit of saving and avoiding unnecessary expenditure must come in.

Everybody has a skill or two, and so don’t have to pay for it again. I clip my own hair and do the same for my family and neighbors. I know an RN-RN couple who planed their schedules such that the husband and wife run turns as “nanny” for their kids.

You can make or plait hair for your family too. And if a spouse was not working yet he/she could be the nanny for the first few months until he/she finds a job.

Talking about great savings brings to mind the need to avoid unnecessary charges from your estate company. Do not think that after moving out your apartment will be painted or renovated before re-renting.

I had to pay hundreds of dollars for wet carpets to be dried and fixed. This was from a faulty WC that kept overflowing. Some of the estate companies can be so mean and will do everything possible to push any of such extra cost on you.

Another registered nurse had the horror of her life when she paid thousands of dollars to this same company for minor damages and spillage her kids caused to the wall.

Please be on the guard. Take pictures and checklist all damages at time of moving in. Stay away from those crazy bills. And don’t sign up for long term tenancy agreements. Start with 3months or 6months as maximum.

In case you don’t like the estate company your employer got for you, try and find a better deal somewhere. Most employers or agencies have inside deals and arrangements and so will recommend a particular estate company but you become the victim of their ruthless charges.

That is a saving strategy you will need at the beginning. I know many RNs who move to USA are having big ambitions and carrying the entire family’s hope.

The lavish lifestyle you might have seen on TV, in Hollywood movies or heard about US may not be the exact situation on the ground. You will need to strategize, plan and save to achieve those big dreams.
