STYLES OF RN-RN COMMUNICATION OR REPORTS COMMONLY USED IN USA.
Which method of RN-RN communication or report are you conversant or familiar with? Communication among colleague RNs is very important. RN to RN hands off report in USA vary from hospital to hospital. It is the methods that vary but the reporting still takes the SBAR (situation, background, assessment, recommendation) format. Many hospitals still practice the RN-RN face to face hands off reporting. Few others use the kardex plus nurse note sheets. Another method of RN-RN hands of reporting is the oncoming and outgoing registered nurses meeting in the conference room forreport and asking questions, where necessary. And then some facilities prefer the voice recording method. In all the above methods, the outgoing RN must be available for questions and clarifications, in case there is any. Most questions spring from bad handwritings, issues with RN assents and other care related matters. In addition, RN-RN interaction and interpersonal relationship with colleagues are so important to the RN profession. Now, let’s look at my first experience story again. What is your personality? Extreme shyness and quietness has no place in US nursing practice. They will give you unfair assignments, manipulate you and even float you anyhow because they know you cannot say no.You must speak out your mind at all times, be assertive and firm. You will be working with different groups of professionals and don’t expect everyone to be your friend. Never think anyone will cover you when you cause any blunder or negligence. You will be working with international RNs and paramedics with different cultural backgrounds. In fact, you meet people from countries you have never heard or read about in your geography lessons. And a language or comment that may be acceptable in a particular culture/society could be offensive or raw in another society. Never be stereotyped about any society, profession or take sides based on mere perception about any group. What matters most is that you learn, respect and understand your new nursing community and you will not regret your relocation. That is the significance of RN-RN communication and interaction. Transitional-rn.com wishes you a smooth transition into a USA RN.
