OTHER RN AND MISCELLANEOUS ISSUES ABOUT AMERICAN LIFE.
Let's talk about RN and miscellaneous issues. They are basic skills and social requirements that you will need. These requirements are important to your functioning well in USA, and they affect you and your family directly. This page gives you an idea about how to handle social concerns like RN and identity theft, tax deductibles as applied to nursing practice, transportation or driving, etc. DRIVING AS A BASIC RN AND MISCELLANEOUS SKILL. One of the most important US social adjustment skill you will need in order to function well as a registered nurse is driving. You must know how to drive. Registered nurses work different shifts and get call backs at odd times. Public transport like the buses and railways are not many and well established as it is in other countries. The few that are available have wide gaps between schedules, and sometimes unreliable. Worse still, not all routes are covered by these buses. Some will even not work on holidays and weekends, or their services end later in the evening. Some hospitals may have shuttle buses which pick employees to and from popular train stations and parking lots. Again, these shuttles have schedules, and do not work on holidays, weekends and in the night. Nurses don’t have weekends or holidays, you know. I don’t think you will like to employ/hire personal drivers to take you to and from work. Come on! You can save your family this avoidable extra cost and inconvenience. And as you will soon be learning, labor is very expensive in USA. In fact, your transportation issue is so important that most RN agencies make it a part of their pre-assignment preparation package. Most agencies even have arrangements with auto companies which finance and lease vehicles for their nurses. Thus, it is important that you know driving and get your driver‘s license before arriving in USA. Then on arrival, you can buy a day or two at a driving school for familiarization driving. This is important especially if you are moving in from a country where you are used to driving on the left side of the road. Or you are initially nervous to drive on a more complex road networks than you were used to. Most of these driving school instructors know the routes used by DMV for behind-the -wheel driving tests. Some even have a fair idea about the scoring scheme DMV uses. But if you are one of the confident and experienced drivers, just reading the DMV handbook may be enough for you to pass the written and driving tests. You don’t have to be a professional driver to pass the driving test. As far as I know, California DMV issues temporary driver‘s license after you have passed the written test. You will only need to present the driver‘s license from your home country. This will not only save you time and money but also help you get good quotes for your auto insurance. You will be able to use this temporary license to drive for months. Just keep renewing it until you are ready for behind –the-wheel test. Please check with the DMV of the state you will be residing. They may also give same consideration to a driver license from your country. For your information, most states don’t recognize and accept international driver‘s license. However, California DMV may accept it just for few days. Other RN and miscellaneous social requirements include tax deductibles as applied to nursing profession, shopping in USA and identity theft.
