STEPS RN AS IDENTITY THEFT VICTIM MUST TAKE.

How do you know you are an identity theft victim? Monitor your bills and account statements closely to detect any suspicious activities.

Other signs that require the RN’s immediate attention are denials of credit for no clear reason, numerous calls on purchases you did not make, not being able to get your bills as expected and unexpected account statements.

Inspect regularly and look out for changes you did not make to your billing and accounts statements.

Also, make very meticulous inspections of your credit report. You don’t always have to pay for your credit report.

The law makes it mandatory for all 3 major credit reporting companies (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax ) to give free credit reports (if you ask for it) once annually.

The following could be contacted for your annual credit report:

• 1-877-322-8228

• Annual Credit Report Request service

P.O. Box 105281

Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

The credit report contains information about you, your bill paying history and all accounts that are opened in your name.

Immediately you realize your wallet containing credit cards etc, are missing or stolen, quickly contact your bankers for advice and stop any transactions on your account.

And should you have any reason to believe you are an identity theft victim, quickly contact the police and file a report. This is important as creditors will want proof of the crime.

Also report the theft to the federal trade commission. This will help law enforcement agencies across the nation in their investigation.

Remember to close any account that has been fraudulently established in your name or been tempered with.

Place a “fraud alert” on your credit report. Call any of the three credit reporters; Experian, Equifax and TransUnion to do this.

This makes the credit reporters to follow certain procedures before making any changes to your accounts or open any account in your name. This also entitles you to receive free copies of your credit reports.

Having done all these and once it is evidently established that you are a victim of identity theft, you will be directed to the appropriate quarters for investigations and assistance to help rebuild your credit.
